The Dochula Festival (Druk Wangyel Tshechu) is an annual celebration held on December 13th at Dochula Pass, located between Thimphu and Punakha. Commissioned by Queen Mother Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck in 2011, the festival honors Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth King of the Wangchuck Dynasty. Unlike other Bhutanese festivals, which are performed solely by monks, this unique event features performances by both the state monk body and the Royal Bhutanese Army, with soldiers undergoing three months of training in folk and mask dances. The festival offers a chance to explore how it reflects the core values of Bhutan and its people, blending spirituality, patriotism, and cultural heritage in a spectacular celebration.
Note: To fully embrace the vibrant festivities and receive the festival’s delightful blessings, plan your tour to begin before 13th December. This ensures at least one full day of immersion in the limitless joy, cultural richness, and spiritual significance of the Paro Tshechu.
